Ten Pillars of Character Building
The Ten Pillars of Character Building are the core beliefs of Dreams for Kids. They are ten sets of virtues to help stay on track of the road to success.
Respect: It is a word that carries little weight in today's society; however Dreams for Kids believes that this word may seem small on the surface but is the foundation of what our society and community stand for.
Trust: One of the most rewarding areas we cover is the topic of trust. This is a topic that covers a wide range of concerns. One of the main exercises we go through is called the "Circle of Trust" students describes their circle of trust. The program also covers their decision making process and why they put certain people in their circle. This exercise has been known to change a Child's mind about whom they trust and whom they want to trust.
Anti-Bullying: This is an issue that concerns most school districts, about how to control bullying. Our emphasis is to empower the child to believe that they can deal with this issue. Secondary to this issue has to do with proliferation of gangs across America. The major focus is on acknowledging that bullying exists and that it does not only apply to gangs.
Self-Esteem: This topic could go on forever, because it's not just children that suffer from self-esteem. The key here is to help a child see their worth at an early age and build on to that. The main issue is that children are generally reminded in many ways that they don't count from lack of parental involvement, historical teachings, to peer pressure. We believe that a child should be built from the inside out, as we know all children are different and handle stress differently.
Dream Building: "What do I want to be? How do I get there? We understand the need for dream building and believe that if kids dream big enough it will encompass their lives and keep them striving for it. During this pillar we help children to understand the work that goes in to being a professional athlete, entertainer, or entrepreneur. We go through an exercise of identifying different professions that they can name and what it would take for them to achieve that goal.
Drugs and Alcohol Prevention: Dreams for Kids starts this session with "Say no to Drugs" and moves in to "Say no to Alcohol and tobacco". We cover different types of drugs, including steroids, and tie it in to the law. We enforce how these two vices can interfere with your goals and dreams.
Health and Nutrition: Everyone has to take care of their body to be able to perform at their best. We help children understand the right way to eat and exercise so that they are left behind with good nutrition, right portion sizes and the importance of eating right.
Education: Dreams for Kids understands the value of education and passes that value on to the youth. It's important for children to understand the skills that an education will give them to be successful in life. Help them to see that they can be anything they want to be if they dream big and not let anything get in the way of those dreams.
Community Responsibility: Our community is our home, it's the place where we come from. Caring is showing a respect and concern for others, especially in your community. Caring can help lead to what is right to make your community a better place to live and grow up in.
Effort: The simplest yet strongest pillar of them all. Effort shows that if you're willing to put something into, it'll pay off. Be willing to work hard and never quit, especially on your dreams!
